SYLVESTER AKPALARA 1993 - 2010 - It is with regret that we learn from Steve Bosley that the young man who was shot and died on 29th December in Peckham was Sylvester Akpalara who many of you will know. Steve has provided the following tribute:-
Sylvester had been a member of the Herne Hill Harriers since he was 12 and competed for the club in Ebbisham, NYAL & Southern Mens league matches as well as competing at London schools, Surrey County, Southern and National & three English Schools championships where he finished fifth and seventh in the 400m finals as a junior boy, indeed the last time I saw him run was in the heats of the U17 mens 400m at the National U17 champs in Bedford.
In 2008 he won a bronze medal in the final of the U15 boys 800m at the National U15 boys indoor championships in Birmingham as well at winning the U15 boys 400m outdoor title at the Surreys & third in the final of the Southern champs and he was nationally ranked in every of his athletics career including 21st over 400m as an U17 in 2010 with a best of 50.4.
Many will remember him running cracking legs in our 4 x 400m relays at NYAL matches and he also ran for the club over 200m and 800m. He was a quiet, unassuming lad who never griped about doing an extra event for the team and often ran himself close to exhaustion for the clubs benefit. He was reliable & rarely late for matches even if he had the furthest of most to travel to get to the coach. He enjoyed his athletics and made many friends both in the club and within the sport.
You can see details of his career on www.thepowerof10.info
Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

In the first post-war Surrey Championships he finished 2nd in the Senior Men's Mile. Subsequently he became a long-time official and volunteer with the club culminating with being their President. His father "Pop" was General Secretary of Surrey AC.

ROY BRISLEY - One of Surrey's top officials more than four decades ago, Roy Brisley, died on November 2 aged 78. He was elected president of the Surrey Women's Athletic Association in 1970 after serving as the association's chief coach, team manager and treasurer.
He was a long-standing member of Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club and a former English schools senior boys high jump champion. Brisley joined the former Hercules Club in Spring 1945 while a pupil at Bec School, Tooting. He proved quite an all-rounder and held club records for the high jump, long jump, shot, discus and decathlon. He excelled at the high jump and set a club men's U17 record of 1.60m in 1949 and the following year improved to 1.73m in winning the Surrey junior title with a Surrey and Club record clearance. Despite finishing third in the Surrey schools championships in 1951, he managed to win the English schools senior boys title at Southampton that year.
In 1952, his future in athletics came under threat when he tore ligaments in his ankle but he bounced back in 1954 by improving his club record in clearing 1.83m. He became a qualified high jump coach in 1950 and then qualified in every track and field event apart from the hammer. He was appointed chief coach to the Surrey women's team in 1955 and before becoming president in 1970 served as team manager and treasurer to the Surrey Women's Association.
In his working life, he was a senior investigations officer with Customs and Excise and after he retired he wrote a book on his career entitled Enforcement, Enforcement about large scale smuggling and other frauds. Outside athletics, he was a governor at Sutton Grammar School for almost 20 years and he presented a trophy to the school for an inter-house public speaking competition in 2008. He was the joint founder of the Sutton Schools Orchestra and for six years organiser of the Sutton Music Festival and secretary of the Sutton Arts Council. His wife Jean, who taught in Sutton, was for a short time a member of Sutton Council.
Roy's funeral is being held in the East Chapel at Croydon Crematorium, Mitcham Road, Croydon, at 11.15am on Monday, 15 November 2010.
CHRIS BRETT - Former Surrey Women's AAA president, Chris Brett, has also died. She was president in 1984. She was also the women's association's assistant secretary and assistant secretary to the joint association on its formation in 1990. Chris was a javelin thrower and competed for Selsonia Ladies AC.
JOHN SMITH - Don Turner advises us that John Smith died on 27 October 2010 at Warwick. As a double London to Brighton winner and the winner of the Comrades he was one of the best runners that RRC/Epsom & Ewell Harriers/Surrey ever had.

NIGEL BONGERS, SURREY FIELD OFFICIAL - Nigel's Grandson Joseph Gipps sadly passed away on 5th May at the children's hospice, Helen House, in his father's arms after a brave struggle, aged 19 months. Joseph was not expected to live as a result of his injuries sustained in a car accident on 20th December. Nigel's eldest daughter Ellie (former Surrey Cross Country champion) passed away on 24th December following her injuries. Joseph spent 19 days in the intensive care unit of John Radcliffe Hospital and on 8th January when they took the ventilation tube out for the final time Joseph was not expected to survive. Amazingly he confounded the experts and managed to sustain his breathing; so he was sent to Helen House for palliative care. With the hospice's care staff loving care and support Joseph made significant improvements particularly with his brain function and was able to recognize and interact with the family and care staff, even learning some sign language. Unfortunately the extent of his brain stem injury meant his vocal chords were paralysed and he had no automatic swallow reflex. As a result of which when he started to reflux this led to lung infections and his breathing was compromised. In the end he deteriorated very quickly from exhaustion and faded away.
Nigel says "The care staff at Helen House are the most exceptional people I have ever encountered and they made Joseph's brief life as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. I now want to support them as they rely for 95% of their funding from donations". He is inviting people to sponsor him in his participation in the Rome Marathon, supporting Helen & Douglas House. You can make a secure online donation using your credit or debit card. Click on the link below:
