Valerie Winn died on 27th March 2023 aged 93. Valerie Ball broke the World Record for 880 yards in 1952 with a time of 2:14.5. She joined Spartan Ladies AC in 1947. In 1948, aged 18, she won the WAAA 400 metres in 60.8. This was the first of 6 successive national titles at 400m/440yards. After her retirement from athletics she coached various sports at the Barn Elms Sports Club. She developed an even greater passion for tennis, competing in the Wimbledon Ladies Veterans Tournament.
Ray died recently. He was a member of Belgrave Harriers. He competed regularly during the 1950s and 1960s in walking events at a time when Surrey was very strong in this discipline. In 1962 he finished 13th in the European Championships 50k Walk.
