INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS - PERFORMANCES BY SURREY ATHLETES

This information is based upon the list, produced by David Cocksedge for the SCAA 1991 Handbook, of participants in the Olympic Games and European Championships. It has been supplemented by the results for those championships since 1991. In addition the World Championships and Commonwealth Games have been added with the Junior (U23 & U20) and Indoor versions of the World and European Championships included as well.

It is not easy to establish which athletes had a county qualification for the older athletes - in particular those who competed before Surrey County Championships were held. Also there were a lot fewer clubs before 1920 and so athletes from all over the country joined clubs like Belgrave Harriers, Herne Hill Harriers, Surrey AC and South London Harriers. Many of the members of these clubs achieved Olympic Games selection and are shown in these lists although their Surrey qualification is uncertain. Athletes born in Surrey (eg Sydney Wooderson) are included as are the performances of athletes when they were not Surrey-qualified but at other times had a Surrey qualification (eg all of Judy Oakes performances are shown including when she was Kent-qualified). If you have information about athletes that should or should not be included then please contact .

Until the 1950's it was common for times to be recorded for the first three finishers only. Therefore some performers have no times. However, by studying photographic records some further times have been estimated and are shown with an e. Also in the early days of photo-finishes the equipment was not completely reliable and so the manual times were the official times - however where photo-finish are known these are shown in brackets after the manual time. In the Commonwealth Games up to 1966 all field event performances were recorded in feet and inches - in these cases the linear measurement is shown followed by the metric equivalent in brackets.

You can view the results for one particular championship (eg 2000 Olympics) or for all occurances of a particular championship (eg All European Indoor Championships) by clicking on the links below. Please note that links are shown only for those championships where Surrey athletes are known to have participated.
