SPORTS HALL 1st October 2000 - 30th September 2001 Updated 18 June 2003

U11 Sports:Hall, Spectrum, Guildford, 15 October 2000

The new season of Sports:Hall opened with a big noise at Guildford. Originally planned as a new meeting from the ‘Awards for All' grant it was adopted by the Sports Hall Athletics Association as the National Launch for the U11 ‘fun in athletics' which is a programme of some 16 events throughout England with other matches in Scotland, Wales and Ulster.

As it was the opening meeting there were several important guests. Sports:Hall sponsors Norwich Union were present with Mrs. Jean Pickering (President), George Bunner (Secretary) of the Association together with Loretta Sollars (AAA Director Of Development) and Chris Carter (Secretary South of England AA).

Also present were two overseas visitors. Salman Al Hasmi from Qatar and Ertay Seyrek from Turkey. They are in England for about three weeks to gain experience with Sports:hall because they are going to manage Sports:Hall programmes in their own countries.

However the highlight of the day, for the competitors, the parents and the officials was the attendance of Kelly Holmes complete with her Olympic bronze medal. With a big smile on her face Kelly joined in. She gave one of the demonstrations, did some starting and was there encouraging the athletes throughout the afternoon.

There were eight teams (because it was the National launch the teams were not just from Surrey) competing with the usual great enthusiasm, determination and noisy support. Every one seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves in taking part. As you probably know all the races and field events are judged on a team basis with individual scores being added to give the team result.

Thanks have to be recorded to the Sports:Hall road show team who bring all the equipment, set it up and then join in with the running of the meeting and to all of the officials without whom the meeting could not have happened.
