ENGLAND ATHLETICS PROPOSED REGISTRATION FEES - Surrey County AA sent the following letter to England Athletics on 12th October 2012:-
Dear Chris Jones
At our general Committee meeting on Friday evening concern was expressed at the fourfold increase in athletes' affiliation fees to England Athletics, a completely counter-productive action to encourage athletes in the after-glow of the Olympics. The biggest problem for clubs is that whereas they often included the EA fee within their club subscriptions and therefore paid to England Athletics for all their membership as they paid their subscriptions, this will be unlikely to be the case in the future. The size of the increase makes it impracticable to do this - thus, clubs will now collect their own membership subscriptions and leave it to the athletes to pay EA directly. Thus, those that do not compete or compete at very low level are unlikely to contribute to EA. A modest increase in fees - and the present system could have continued.
The suddenness of this announcement followed almost immediately by a non-democratic AGM makes the situation even disheartening to those who give so much voluntary time to athletics.
Yours sincerely
Don Turner
Honorary General Secretary

The analysis for the U17 / U15 / U13 Age Groups based upon the information in the Surrey rankings on 10 November 2012 has been completed. The information is analysed firstly by event - to show the overall situation in Surrey for each event and secondly by club - to give a comparison of the relative strengths of each club. The tabulations show the results for eight years (2005 - 2012) and provide a measure of the changes within the sport. As some clubs have not yet provided our statisticians with their best performance lists for 2012 then the lists should, for now, be considered to be provisional.

FRED STEBBINGS - We regret to report the death of Fred Stebbings on 20 October 2012 less than 3 weeks after the passing of his younger brother (see below). Although he subsequently moved to Bedfordshire much of his athletic career was in Surrey where he was County Steeplechase champion in the 1960s and he represented Surrey both on the track & over cross-country. He was a member of Croydon Harriers where he was a Vice-President and had been a Committe member. He also met his wife, Jill, there who was another of their leading distance runners. We send our condolences to Jill, Lucy & Simon. The funeral was held at Luton Crematorium, Stopsley Park on Friday 2nd November 2012 at 1:45pm.

Fred first came to the attention of SCAN when he placed 4th in the Surrey Youths Cross-Country championship in January 1960 and then later that year he was 5th in the English Schools Inter Boys 1 Mile. The following year he won his first County titles by winning the Youths Cross-Country in January and the Junior 1500m Steeplechase in April and then in September gained his first Surrey County selection in the Junior Inter-County at Oxford University where he won the Steeplechase. Fred's profile, although incomplete, gives an indication of the breadth of his achievements in and for Surrey.

The photo opposite appeared in the June 1963 edition of SCAN. It shows Fred (Croydon vest, white with one visible horizontal stripe, and number 81 plus A) near the front in the snow at Priory Park, Reigate.

CHRIS STEBBINGS 1951-2012 - It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Chris Stebbings on 1 October 2012. Although his later years were spent away from Surrey as a member of Luton AC, his early career was in Surrey. He joined Croydon Harriers where his brother Fred had long been a leading Surrey athlete particularly in the Steeplechase. Therefore when Chris won the Surrey Youths Cross-Country in January 1969 (beating Bernie Ford) future success in the sport looked likely. As a Senior in the Surrey Cross-Country he placed 5th(1976), 8th(1974) and 15th(1975). His funeral was held on 15th October 2012.

The photo opposite, by Ron Linstead, shows Chris leading from the eventual winner Ron Martin (Walton AC) in the 1969 Surrey Junior Men's 3000 metres championship.

DEREK CROOKES 1940-2012 - It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Derek Crookes on 26 September 2012 at Epsom General Hospital. Although he last years were ones of poor health we remember Derek as a man of great vigour and enthusiasm.. He became involved with many aspects of our sport not only within the County Association - a stalwart of the South of Thames Cross-Country Association and the Thameside Track & Field League for Young athletes typify the breadth of his interest. Within the County he was President of the Surrey County AAA in 1985. In addition he was General Secretary and organised our Road & Cross-Country Championships. Derek was one of the instigators of Under-13 Inter-Counties Track & Field Meeting that Surrey has hosted since 1993 - a meeting that has provided the first major competion for many young athletes including the 2012 Olympic Long Jump Champion, Greg Rutherford. The funeral was held on Friday 12th October at the North East Surrey Crematorium.

U13/U15 SPORTSHALL, SPECTRUM, GUILDFORD, 22 JANUARY 2012 - RESULTS (revised 09.02.2012).   27 November Results.   23 October Results.
TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS, HISTORICAL RESULTS - We have located the complete results for the 1979 Women's Championships. They can be viewed as a pdf. These performances have been added to the Championships database the performances so that athlete profiles and All-Time have been updated.
ALL-TIME RANKINGS VERSION 2 - We have created a new version of the facility to view the known best performances by Surrey athletes for the standard events for all of the standard age groups. The new version allows you choose whether to display the Top 10 or the Top 25 or the Top 50 or the Top 100. Each time you make a request the database will be searched and a fresh screen is built. This means that you will always see the latest situation. However because of the time taken to query the database and then build the screen you will experience a delay when generating a Top 100 listing when compared to when generating a Top 10.
We wish to thank those who have provided updates and invite others to do the same. We are attempting to apply the current UKA age group rules on historical performances. However without many dates of birth it is not possible to be certain when some athletes moved from one age group to another. In particular, for women the Under 20 age group has only been recognised recently and athletes used to move from being Intermediates (equivalent to Under 17) to being Seniors. Therefore we seek your help in providing dates of birth and first names of those athletes whose names are not shown underlined and in blue. We are still finding past performances that warrant inclusion in past annual lists which means that the listings are still liable to change as we add performances that should be included in the All-Time listings. Please submit full details of any additions or changes to the Webmaster. To view the All-Time Rankings then click on the button above.
