Ferdie Gilson's profile.

MICHAEL NUGENT 1935 - 2020

It is with regret that we have learnt that, following a short illness, Michael Nugent died peacefully at his home in New York on 4th August 2020. Michael was one of many pupils from John Fisher School who excelled at the Pole Vault in the 1950s. After John Fisher he went to Cambridge University and won an athletics blue.
Although our records for the 1950s are incomplete they do show Michael winning the County Pole Vault title twice as a Youth; once as a Junior and three times as a Senior. In 1955 he won the Senior Boys Pole Vault at the English Schools Championships. Michael represented Great Britain at the International Student Games at Paris in 1957 where he finished =11th with a clearance of 3.35m.

Michael Nugent's profile with apologies for any ommissions.

SEAA COMPETITION LIMITED have issued a further update on 17th July 2020 which gives details of an SEAA Track & Field meeting to be held on 29/30 August 2020.
The previous update was issued on 6th July 2020.. This was an update to the statement below dated 1st May 2020:-

SEAA Competition Limited is working with England Athletics to reschedule individual championships if possible. As a result, we will be postponing the U20/Senior Championships that are scheduled to be held at the end of June. The U13/15 and U17 Championships are under review and further information will be posted in due course.
The All Age Group Combined Events Championships scheduled for July and the U15/17 Inter Counties Championships scheduled for September have been cancelled.
SEAA Competition are still working on providing a full Indoor, Cross Country and Road Running season if circumstances permit.

John Gandee - SEAA Competition Chairman

CORONAVIRUS / COVID 19 - Surrey County AA has been monitoring the Coronavirus situation very closely and unfortunately we will have to postpone the Awards Evening scheduled for 3rd April. We hope to hold the evening later in the year, and as soon as we have a date we will be in contact again. The AGM and Executive Meeting scheduled for 27th March have been postponed. We hope to find a new date later in the year.

Our Endurance Officials Secretary, David Clarke has issued the following on 25th September 2020:-
1. England Athletics will not issue permits for any XC events until some ‘COVID secure’ test events have been completed. So no events will be possible in October and the season will start in November at the very earliest. 2. Because of social distancing, current guidance does not allow “massed starts”. So if events do go ahead they may have to be on a time trial basis.
3. Even if we resolve these two issues it is proving extremely difficult, if not impossible, to get permission from the land owners to hold XC events because of COVID fears.

REQUESTS FOR PAYMENT FROM SURREY ATHLETICS OFFICIALS - We have noticed recent requests for payment of monies in emails which appear to have been sent by an SCAA official. These are not genuine and should be ignored and certainly not replied to. It is not the practice of SCAA officials to request payment from individuals using a Surrey Athletics email address. The Surrey Athletics email addresses have been created to allow the athletics community to communicate with appropriate SCAA officials and are published on our website to facilitate this. Unfortunately, we are not able to stop unauthorised people sending emails that give the impression that they have been sent from an SCAA official. In general, scepticism is a good reaction to any such requests for money.
NATIONAL UNION OF TRACK STATISICIANS (NUTS) - NUTS is due to open its athletics archive/museum later this year at Coombe Wood School, Melville Avenue, Croydon CR2 7NY. They are on the lookout for donations and or loans of the following:-
(1) Books; (2) Programmes; (3) Photos; (4) Trophies; (5) Medals; (6) Club Badges & Vests (including clubs that no longer exist); (7) Old or Olympic kit; (8) Unwanted stopwatches (Do not have to work); (9) Documents; (10) Old running shoes, any pre-war would be wonderful. especially Laws, Fosters etc; (11) Other relevant items suitable for display or reference.
Should you have any of the above that you would like them to consider, please contact Mike Fleet 020 8647 1341 or email mike@mafleet.co.uk.

SURREY COUNTY ATHLETICS HISTORICAL INFORMATION - CAN YOU HELP? - Keith Burchell currently holds the archives for the Surrey County AAA and Surrey County WAAA. These are far from being complete. If you have any past information such as programmes, committee minutes, championship results etc that you are thinking of disposing then please contact Keith Burchell. In particular, sets of County Championship results prior to 1980 are sought.

RESPECT TO OUR TEAM MANAGERS

Surrey County Athletic Association does not accept or condone the use of offensive behaviour towards or abuse or bullying of team managers under any circumstances. Team managers are all volunteers and make their decisions on the basis of information available to them. While not everyone is likely to agree with all of their decisions they must respect them and all the hours of work and agonising that go into the difficult task these team managers carry out in the interests of encouraging athletics in the county.

CARDIAC RISK IN THE YOUNG

England Athletics is publicising this charity. CRY is a charity that was established to raise awareness of conditions that can lead to the sudden cardiac death of young people. They operate a screening programme at a number of clinics around the UK and support this with mobile units that travel to other locations.
Full information about CRY and their services can be found on their website at www.c-r-y.org.uk. Young people between the age of 14 and 35 who would like to have cardiac testing can go to www.testmyheart.org.
You can also see www.uka.org.uk/governance/health-safety/cardiac-screening-for-athletes/ for information on work being done by UKA in this area.
Following the death of a young member of Croydon Harriers, Mike Fleet has been promoting this charity for several years and anyone wishing to have copies of his photographs has been asked to make a donation to CRY. Further, he has been exchanging for donations bookmarks signed by famous athletes to raise funds for this charity. We thank those of you who have shown your support in the past.
